Durban Poison has deep roots in the Sativa landrace gene pool. The strain\u2019s historic phenotypes were first noticed in the late 1970s by one of America\u2019s first International strain hunters, Ed Rosenthal. According to cultivation legend, Rosenthal was in South Africa in search of new genetics and ran across a fast flowering strain in the port city of Durban. After arriving home in the U.S., Rosenthal conducted his own selective breeding process on his recently imported seeds, then began sharing. Rosenthal gave Mel Frank some of his new South African seeds, and the rest was cannabis history.<\/span><\/p>\n

Frank, who wrote the \u201cMarijuana Grower\u2019s Guide Deluxe\u00bb in 1978, modified the gene pool to increase resin content and decrease the flowering time. In search of short-season varieties that could hit full maturation on the U.S. East Coast, Frank\u2019s crossbreeding efforts resulted in two distinct phenotypes, the \u201cA\u201d line and \u201cB\u201d line. The plant from Frank\u2019s \u201cA\u201d line became today\u2019s Durban Poison, while the \u201cB\u201d line was handed off to Amsterdam breeder David Watson, also known as \u201cSam the Skunkman.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Durban Poison has a dense, compact bud structure that\u2019s typical of landrace Indica varieties, but the flowers\u2019 elongated and conical shape is more characteristic of a Sativa.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

The smell from ATF is amazing and deserves an award on its own; it reminds me of frosty pine or menthol\u2026 with a fresh lemon scent.<\/p>\n

To the naked eye, the buds are all very nicely grown except for the one small bud that could use slightly better trimming. Other than that, Alaskan Thunder marijuana reminded me most of Jack Herer (taste, smoke, aroma) with a more intense (cerebral) head high.
